Early days...

Anthony George the founder of George's Fruit Barn grew up in Matcham Central Coast NSW, on his family's farm along with his 4 brothers and 1 sister. They were immigrants, his Father was a french citizen and they all worked on the farm after school growing and selling beans and had success with their crops planting early and picking early to beat the competition. Sending off loads of beans by train to Melbourne.

George's started with a road side stall...

By 1965 Anthony George was selling produce from the farm at a road side stall, with a little more than some tables. He told the Avoca Beach News Community Association Incorporated when they did an article for their newspaper on his enterprise due to the fruit shop growth and success that he had other growers bringing him their produce to sell from his stall .

Anthony George met Marie....

Anthony George's greatest achievement however was in the 1980's when he began to court Marie by correspondence. Marie lived in the Philippines and was also from a family who grew and sold vegetables from their road side stall. For 2 years they wrote to each other and they married and the 'rest is history'. Together they raised 5 children and built George's Fruit Barn into a very successful business. Marie brought with her business expertise with an Asian touch.  Anthony said that the Asian lines were due to Marie and her sisters who had to go to Sydney to get products for the Asian  meals they cooked. They thought "What the heck, we may as well supply the Central Coast as well."
